This is a small fragment of a normally-coiled ammonite. The name given above is more complicated than most, so here is an explanation. The first Oxytropidoceras is the genus. The second (in parentheses) is the subgenus. The specific name is peruvianum. The person who first described the species was von Buch. Since the original generic name has changed, the name of the person is placed inside parentheses. The subspecies name is multifidum, and the person who described the subspecies was Steinmann. Again, this is placed inside parentheses, because the generic name has changed. This ammonite has gone by many names, among them Manuaniceras pervianum mutifidum. The bifurcation of the ribs at mid-flank is characteristic of the subspecies. In Oxytropidoceras (Oxytropidoceras) peruvianum peruvianum, the bifurcations occur at the umbilicus. The width is 3.3 cm.
