Close-Up of Comet Hale-Bopp (Blue-Enhanced)

This photo was taken at f2.8 with a 40 second exposure time and ASA 1000 color print film on March 27, 1997 at about 9 PM. The image has been enhanced to show the bluish second tail, which is above the white main tail. (It is still pretty faint.) The blue tail is due to ions. The white tail is due to dust. They are separated because they are deflected differently by the solar wind.
